BCPS Teacher Honored with 2026 Outstanding Holocaust Educator Award

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) proudly congratulates Sande Hartman of West Broward High School for being named a recipient of the 2026 Gutterman Family Outstanding Holocaust Educator Award by the Arthur and Emalie Gutterman Family Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education (CHHRE) at Florida Atlantic University.
Hartman is one of three South Florida educators selected for this distinguished recognition, which honors teachers who have made a significant impact in Holocaust, genocide and human rights education through exemplary teaching, leadership and community engagement.
The Gutterman Family Outstanding Holocaust Educator Award recognizes educators who inspire students to become informed, compassionate and responsible global citizens while promoting respect for human dignity and human rights.
“Sande Hartman’s dedication to Holocaust education helps students understand the importance of confronting hatred, preserving historical truth and standing up for the rights of others,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn. “We are proud of her commitment to fostering meaningful learning experiences that encourage empathy, critical thinking and civic responsibility.”
“Each year for the past 17 years, we have celebrated the accomplishments of outstanding teachers who go above and beyond the requirements of the Holocaust education mandate and are truly making a difference in the lives of their students, in their schools and in the world,” said Linda Medvin, executive director of the Gutterman Family CHHRE.
Hartman will be honored at the 17th annual Gutterman Family Outstanding Holocaust Educator Awards Dinner on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at the Marriott at Boca Center. Through the generous support of the Gutterman family, award recipients will also participate in an educator field study during the summer of 2027.
