BCPS Launches School Bus Safety Program - Buses Equipped with AI Technology for 2026/27 School Year

WHO:
Broward County School Board Members; Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Superintendent; and Representatives from Broward County Schools Police, BCPS Student Transportation & Fleet Services and BusPatrol

WHAT:
BCPS is expanding its efforts to protect students through the Broward County School Bus Safety Program in partnership with BusPatrol. As students return to school, District school buses will be equipped with automated stop-arm cameras designed to detect and deter motorists who illegally pass stopped school buses, helping to create a safer environment for students traveling to and from schools.

WHY:
Each year, millions of motorists nationwide illegally pass stopped school buses, placing students at risk as they board and exit buses. Through its partnership with BusPatrol, BCPS is expanding school bus safety by using AI-powered technology to deter illegal passing and increase driver awareness.

The program begins with a 30-day warning period. Beginning September 9, 2026, motorists who illegally pass a stopped school bus may receive a $225 citation in accordance with Florida law.
